Later, in 1967 it became the International Association of Microbiological Societies affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) as a Division. It acquired independence In 1980 IUMS became an independent Union Member of the International Council for Science (ICSU) in 1982. ICSU then merged with the International Social Science Council (ISSC) into the International Science Council (ISC) in 2018.

IUMS is one of the 31 Scientific Unions of the ISC – a non-governmental organization with a unique global membership that brings together 40 international scientific Unions and Associations and over 140 national and regional scientific organizations including Academies and Research Councils.
